Transporting light
Paris-based design duo Döppel Studio, founded by Lionel Dinis Salazar and Jonathan Omar, operates from its office in the 13th arrondissement. From the outset, the studio has explored the object as a bearer of multiple meanings, of an imaginary re-invoked to new sensorialities. Graduates of the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and the HEAR in Strasbourg, they joined forces in 2016 to develop a shared vision, driven by their interest in the object, its multiple meanings and therefore its possible detour.
For the “Néophore” project, exhibited at ToolsGalerie in Paris, the duo are interested in the shapes of ancient jars and amphorae and their reinterpretation as luminous containers through the use of terracotta and a specific enamel. The light source becomes the essence of reflection: like a material to be transported, it guides the shape of the container, inspiring new uses and new objects. The contrast between light (in this case Neon) and terracotta led Doppel Studio to collaborate with Aliénor Martineau of Alma Mater, a ceramist specializing in the manufacture of enamels based on natural minerals, to design a custom enamel sensitive to luminosity.
Between amphora, lamp and container, the exhibition invites us to discover a collection of atypical pieces which, through the object, highlight the uses and measurement systems of the earliest civilizations, the cult of Prometheus (fire) and, of course, light, whether passing through or overflowing, as a material in its own right.
Unique pieces, height 35 cm, diameter 21 to 25 excluding neon.
